Founders: Ralph J. Roberts, Daniel Aaron, and Julian Brodsky

Industry: Comcast is a leading cable company in the United States that provides cable television, broadband Internet, and telephone services to residential and commercial consumers.

History:

Founded in Tupelo, Mississippi, Comcast has its headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company was originally formed as American Cable Systems, which was founded by Ralph J. Roberts, Daniel Aaron, and Julian A. Brodsky in 1963. It was then incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1969 under the new name Comcast Corporation. The name “Comcast” is a combination of the words “communication” and “broadcast.” Their services involve electronic retailing and television programming content.

Over the years, Comcast became majority owner of a number of other companies, including Comcast Spectator, Comcast SportsNet, E! Entertainment Television, Style Network, Versus, and G4 among others. In addition, the company started a new sports channel in the greater New York City region in conjunction with the cable television company Time Warner Cable and the professional baseball team New York Mets.

Then, in 2002, Comcast acquired AT&T Broadband cable systems, which was how the company eventually became one of the top cable TV operators in the United States, with a robust market base of 22 million customers. In 2005, the company began providing digital phone service. In the same year, a component that develops Web portals and acquisition of Internet businesses was created.

Furthermore, in 2009, Comcast began attracting DSL subscribers from other phone companies, making it the nation’s largest Internet service provider.

At present, this cable company has 16.3 million digital cable customers, 24.6 million cable customers, 5.6 million voice customers, and 14.4 million high-speed Internet customers. The firm also works in partnership with Tele-Communications Inc., Sprint Corp., and Cox Communications Inc. in the Sprint PCS digital wireless phone joint venture.
