Founder: Ted Turner
Industry: Television news broadcasting
The Cable News Network, which is almost always referred to by its initials CNN, is a United States television news network. Founded in 1980 by Ted Turner, CNN was the first TV channel to provide 24-hour news coverage. While the news network is affiliated with several organizations, it mainly broadcasts from its locations in Atlanta, Georgia, the Time Warner Center in New York City, studios in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. Today, through CNN International, the broadcasting network can be seen in more than 212 countries and territories.
CNN was launched in June 1980 by 25 original members. Since its debut, the company has expanded its services and has now included several cable and satellite TV networks, numerous websites, specialized closed-circuit networks, and a radio network. Also, the network’s success made the founder Ted Turner one of the nation’s major movers and shakers. Its progress has also set the stage for Time Warner’s eventual acquisition of Turner Broadcasting.
After five years of operation, CNN outgrew its home in the outskirts of Midtown, Atlanta. The company moved to a section of the building that once housed the amusement park The World of Sid and Marty Krofft. This move made Ted Turner instrumental in the revival of Atlanta’s downtown.
Over the years, CNN has brought news updates about significant events in history to the world. The company has also created various original shows to make viewer’s TV experience more worthwhile. Moneyline, CNN’s primary financial show, premiered in 1980 and has been on air for over 20 years. Larry King Live, another of CNN’s big shows, was launched in June 1985.
According to Nielsen ratings,CNN stands as the second cable news network in terms of regular viewers. Moreover, Nielsen Cume Ratings grade the company as having the most unique viewers.
