History:

The Bank of Montreal is one of Canada’s largest banks in terms of deposits. In the French language, it is known as the Banque de Montreal; while in most languages, it is referred to as the BMO. The bank was established way back in 1817, which makes it the oldest existing bank in the country.

At present, the Bank of Montreal serves more than seven million customers. In order to cater to its huge base of account holders, the Bank of Montreal maintains its headquarters in Montreal, Quebec, Toronto and Ontario, Canada. The Bank of Montreal’s official legal corporate head office, however, is located in Place d’Armes, Montreal.

In addition to these branches, the Bank of Montreal also operates more than 900 branches all over Canada. This Canadian bank also operates as the Harris Bank in Chicago and in several other places in the United States.

All in all, this major international bank maintains a total of 1,100 branches around the world, including its branches in Canada. It currently holds more than $387 billion worth of assets.

The Bank of Montreal serves various markets in three “client groups,” which are designed to operate under multiple brand names. These three client groups consist of the Personal and Commercial Client Group, the Private Client Group, and the Investment Banking Group.

The BMO’s Personal and Commercial Client Group is devoted to retail banking. This group includes the BMO Bank of Montreal in Canada. Apart from this, the retail banking group also deals with BMO’s Mosaik Mastercard credit cards, BMO’s life insurance company BMO life, as well as mbanx, the BMO’s former virtual bank division.

The BMO Private Client Group, on the other hand, deals with wealth management. This division operates the BMO Nesbitt Burns, the Harris Investor Services, the BMO Harris Private Banking, as well as self-service investing BMO InvestorLine.
