History:
Banco do Brasil, also known as Bank of Brazil, is the oldest existing bank in Brazil, as well as one of the world’s oldest financial institutions. The Bank of Brazil was founded in 1808 and has been operating for decades. The bank was founded by João VI of Portugal after he moved from Europe to Brazil. The then regent prince established Banco do Brasil with the purpose of creating something to finance the kingdom’s debt right after his move.
Apart from being the oldest active bank, this Brasilia based bank is also considered as the major Latin and Brazilian bank in terms of assets.
Although Banco do Brasil is controlled by the Brazilian government, the bank’s management maintains standard international practices and its stocks are traded at the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange. The bank is recognized as being one of the four most profitable banks in Brazil, along with Santander Brasil, Itau Unibanco, and Bradesco. Banco do Brasil has maintained that reputation since 2000. Apart from this, the bank is also known for having strong leadership towards retail banking.
