Florida Power & Light
The Florida Power and Light (FPL) company, the FPL Group’s principal subsidiary, is based in Juno Beach Florida. Florida Power and Light currently serves an estimated 4.4 million customers all over Florida and owns several power generation assets across 20 states in the US.
The Florida Power & Light Company was established in 1925. The company was initially a merger of several small companies providing power as well as other services to Florida’s local communities. The company eventually grew in size as the population in Florida experienced rapid growth. In 1989, the company was hailed as a winner of the Deming Prize. Having Dr. Noriaki Kano as a consultant, the company became the first company to ever receive such honor outside Japan.
Florida Power & Light basically provides electricity generation, transmission and distribution. The company’s Martin County Power Plant currently stands as the United States’ largest fossil fuel burning power plant. The company’s large gas plant, which is located at the north of Indiantown, had started operating since the early 1970s. The plant pumps water out into the nearby 27-km cooling pond right after it has been cooled off with water. Beyond the cooling pond, which happens to be one of Florida’s largest bodies of water, is the 440-acre Barley Barber Swamp.
The company plans to expand its existing operations. In fact, the company is on the process of constructing another 3,800 megawatt power plant in the Northern Palm Beach County. The plant, once it is completed, will become the United States largest fossil fuel power plant.
In addition to owning and constructing gas plants, the Florida Power & light company also owns and operates the Turkey Point and St Lucie nuclear power plants and has recently proposed to construct two additional nuclear generators in Turkey Point. The company is also constructing the $476 million Martin Next Generation Solar Energy Center as well as two other solar photovoltaic power generation systems at the Kennedy Space Center.
