Cameco Corporation

Cameco, a uranium company based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was established way back in 1988. It came as a result of the merger and privatization of the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation and the federally owned Eldorado Nuclear Limited.

Cameco, which is actually short for “Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation,” currently stands as the largest publicly traded uranium company worldwide. Employing more than 1,600 people, the company was responsible for supplying an estimated 15% of the world’s total uranium production for 2008.

A total of 62% of Cameco Corporation was initially owned by the provincial government, while the remaining 38% belonged to the federal government. Twenty percent of Cameco’s Initial public offering was conducted in 1991. In 1996, the company successfully acquired the United State’s largest uranium producer, Power Resources Inc. Two years after that, Cameco has gained ownership over the Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited. In the following years though, government ownership of the company steadily decreased. Eventually in February of 2002, the full privatization of the leading uranium company was approved.

At present, the company is headed by its president and chief executive officer Gerald Grandey and Chairman Victor Zaleschuk. The company manages a number of uranium mines in Kazakhstan and North America. Cameco also operates a few uranium mines in Nebraska and Wyoming. In addition to that, the company also has a mine at the Rabbit Lake as well as a mill at Key Lake, Saskatchewan.

The company was listed as one of the Best Companies to Work for in Canada by the Financial Post magazine. The recognition emphasizes the competitiveness of Cameco’s employee benefit programs and development opportunities. The company excels in producing uranium products that are used by nuclear energy plants all over the world to generate electricity. Aside from merely providing the means to produce electric energy, the company makes sure it provides only the cleanest source of energy available.
