History:
Strabag, the European construction firm headquartered in Vienna, is Austria’s largest construction company. Strabag’s history is rooted from two businesses, Lerchbaumer and Strassenwalzenbetrieb. The first company was established in 1835 by Anton Lerchbaumer and the second was founded in 1895.

The two business firms were housed under the ownership of Bauindustrie Beteilingungs Aktiengesellschaft, which was renamed to Strabag SE in 1998. The company is structured into several divisions; Road Construction, Building and Construction Engineering, Tunneling and Services, and Service Companies.

Strabag’s major projects consists of the Alte Weser Lighthouse, which was finished in 1964 and Basra International Airport in Iraq, which was finished in 1988. Other projects completed by Strabag are the following infrastructures: Copenhagen Metro (2002), Manapouri Second Tailrace Tunnel (2002), the Sofia Airport Second Terminal (2006) and the Vrmac Tunnel of Montenegro (2007).

Strabag’s latest project is actually in New York-the Niagara Third Hydro Tunnel, which is scheduled for completion in the year 2013. The firm is also involved in the Limerick Tunnel construction. Its design functions as a connector from junction of the Limerick ring road with the N18 Ennis road. The Limerick Tunnel project is expected to be completed before 2010 ends.
